When asked to choose an author for critical analysis, of course I am going to choose Hunter S. Thompson! Hunter S. Thompson lived an outrageous lifestyle involving the use of alcohol, drugs, gambling, and violence. His unruly life style led to his unique style of writing. Thompson is a true artist whose work is intriguing to me. He allows his feelings to come out in his writings by using exaggeration and sarcasm in reference to non-fiction stories, in his own style of writing known as Gonzo Journalism. In his story, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hunter S. Thompson tells his readers about his experiences with heavy duty narcotics as he drives to Las Vegas to chase the American dream. In this story, Thompson uses tactics to express his feelings, which comes across as a hilarious read. For example, in the beginning of the story, Hunter S. Thompson writes, “ I remember saying something like, “I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive….” And suddenly there was a tremble roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats.” Although Hunter S. Thompson is intriguing to me, his way of writing is very controversial and offensive to many people. Hunter S. Thompson tells the truth whether people like it or not, and critics should look into his writing and try to understand them before judging him!
